Over this
past day of scrolling through a couple of news websites, I have noticed a trend
in the headlines. If they were not reviews, they had the words “Augmented Reality” in the title and that
got me thinking. Could augmented reality be the next new thing for everyday
life?
Bet you didn’t
know, but you have already been exposed to several examples of Augmented
Reality. Cast your mind back to the Pokémon GO phase everyone from their
grandmother to their dog seemed to be obsessed with, yes that is Augmented
Reality. Although one down side was it drained your battery of your phone.
AR for your
phone at an extensive time doesn’t seem to be reasonable right now. If battery
power wasn’t a problem and the form of was more polished, then AR could take
the technology market by storm, just like VR has.
But it
could be a fad, just like how everyone thought that the Wii motion control was
going to be the next thing. Microsoft came out with the Xbox Kinect to cash
into the fad back in 2010, but since Microsoft didn’t provide it with good games, the hype around motion control died. Thus, killing company investment
and development in it.
There is
another caution, AR could possibility not look like the CGI in cool sci-fi
movies in our lifetimes but who knows!
The
usefulness of AR in everyday life would absolutely be useful for navigation and
design but we will see where technology will take us.
